Effects on Blood Glucose

Olive oil helps stabilize blood glucose levels by slowing down digestion in the stomach and allowing for a more evenly distributed release of glucose into the bloodstream. Numerous clinical studies have concluded that olive oil can markedly lower blood glucose levels in diabetics, reports the “Natural Standard Herb & Supplement Reference: Evidence-Based Clinical Reviews.” Research has shown that diabetics can lower their blood sugar levels to such an extent that they require less synthetic insulin. Diabetics are often told to follow low-fat diets to help prevent heart damage, but monounsaturated fats, such as oleic acid, provide a variety of health benefits.

Other Benefits

In addition to lowering blood cholesterol and stabilizing blood glucose levels, olive oil reduces inflammation and prevents diabetic complications, such as stroke and heart attack. Inflammation is considered one of the root causes of diabetes because it contributes to insulin resistance.
